Supporting your family
through life's transitions
GRIEF AND LOSS
Every moment of change includes some loss. Even the positive changes force us to leave something familiar behind. Aging brings many changes including changes to our physical body, our role in our families and community, our access to resources, our sense of identity and our autonomy. It is important to acknowledge the loss and feel the grief associated with these changes even when they are inevitable and necessary. Science has confirmed feeling supported significantly decreases subjective reports of pain. We can literally tolerate more when we know we are not alone. If you have been avoiding feeling the feelings of loss because you are afraid they will be overwhelming please reach out. You can do this. You just need some support.
MEDICAL ILLNESS
At any age, chronic illness or disability is an experience that tries our patience and challenges our sense of identity. It may also cause us to ask big questions about meaning, purpose, and faith. To add insult to injury, the limitations around mobility and energy that illness creates in our lives often makes accessing the support we need feel overwhelmingly difficult right at the time we need it most. In my years of hospital work I have seen this gap in care again and again. That is why I come to you. Anyone experiencing a medical illness deserves emotional care and limited mobility should not be a barrier.
DEATH AND DYING
Death is one of the only human experiences we are all guaranteed to have and yet it is the one we most avoid talking about and in some cases preparing for. What does it mean to have a good death? What do you want the end of your story to look like? What are the values and priorities that will help you make final decisions? Does your family know what is important to you if they end up having to make decisions on your behalf? What are you most proud of about your life? Is there anything still undone that you need to finish? Dying is your last act of living and the last chapter in your story. Let's talk about how you are going to make it intentional, meaningful, and beautiful.
ADDICTION
Addiction is often treated as a mental illness but in my observation it is a heart sickness. Addiction happens when grief and fear take over so completely that the sober mind becomes an unbearable place to live and substances are the only tool available to shut it off. The pain you carry is not your fault but finding ways to safely process that pain is the only way to stop being controlled by it. You don't have to do it alone. In fact, you probably can't. What you need, is to feel safe enough to feel the feelings that you've been avoiding and to borrow someone else's self-regulation until you can learn the tools yourself. I'm not pretending it will be easy. It will be the hardest thing you have ever done but you can do it and you are worth doing it for.
